Dear Junk Mail Club,
It's been 10 months since the last letter. This is Garry speaking. That is the longest it’s ever been, however I have returned with an offering …
Today marks the three year anniversary of soap water. It's crazy how time flies, yet it does feel somewhat truthful. In celebration, we are printing a limited run of soap water CDs (which I’ve never done before, and you can purchase exclusively here). Big thank you to Chris and Orange Label Records for encouraging me to put these together and helping print them. Awesome mode activated. The soap water rollout was a really special era of my life that I’ll always look back on with gratitude.
You can buy the soap water Limited Edition CD here.
The CD includes the entire tracklist of soap water, “striptease” as a bonus track, and the “song from the roof scene” of soap water: the movie. A lot of people had been asking about that last track since the release of the short film, but it was an unfinished demo that I never intended to share. However, when putting together this limited run of CDs, I thought it’d be fun for it to be a part of it. The original demo file is actually the first version of “racetrack” and is literally titled “fun” lol.
Another day becomes an anniversary. I’ve been in Brooklyn now for over a year. It was the best decision I could’ve made. I live with my two best friends and am surrounded by an ever growing cluster of new and old ones, too. I love them and I should say it more. I’m in a band, as I’d always wanted to be, and I’m playing soccer again consistently. Those two are the highlights of my every week. There are things I still miss all the time, specific burritos and this particular taro boba in LA, being able to drive to see my family, and driving in general to be fair, but for the time being, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. I’m way past surviving my first winter and am now ready to depart from the hot and humid summer. As you read this, I am probably sewing my own fabric soccer ball and studying chess openings with Chris. At times, life feels aimless, as it does, and I wonder what if I’m wasting my days, biking around the city and sitting in my room screaming into a microphone. But here we are.
Though I haven’t released anything new under my prior artist aliases, I am constantly working on new stuff and have released a few projects this year that you may have missed because I’m being annoying and releasing under new names. The first is a collection of songs written and recorded in a singular week of July. I just put it out a couple weeks ago. I think it’s my favorite thing I’ve done, it feels the most connected and honest I’ve ever been able to put into music. You can listen to “Take Me in From the Roof” by Great white shark here.
The other project I put out this year is a self-titled EP with the band I’m in called “Holidays in United States.” We met in January at a birthday party at the corner bar near my apartment and we all bonded over always wanting to be in a midwest emo band. The following week we tried out playing some music together and haven’t stopped since. Being a part of that band has been so liberating for the way I write and approach music as whole. Shoutout Simon, Connor, and Kali.
If you’d like to stay more up to date with what I’m doing, I’m always posting random videos to my Youtube like the one below.
Sorry for bombarding you with links. Okay, bye for now.
Yours,
Garry
